Paul took center stage from the time he was born. His normal pattern was to sleep all day and be awake all night (which did not thrill his mother who then had to get up with two toddlers who had slept all night and wanted to be awake all day!). At 2 a.m. I remember having him in the backpack and walking him around and around the dining room table. I would be crying and he would be bouncing and laughing and waving his arms. I often thought of that in later years when I would be at a smoky bar watching the band at 1 a.m. with Paul bouncing and laughing and waving his arms. He trained for his role for a very long time.
The kids were always doing plays, puppet shows and other forms of fantasy games. Paul frequently took the lead roles, such as his famous portrayal of Thumbelina.
When Paul was 8, a children's theatre company formed in Davis--The Sunshine Children's Theatre. All the kids became involved. Paul was cast as the Page in Cinderella in the first production and he quickly moved into lead roles such as the White Rabbit in Alice in Wonderland, Peter in Heidi, and the Scarecrow in The Wizard of Oz.
David as a Munchkin, Paul as the Scarecrow, Ned as the TinMan
